  • Edited and designed by book artist Thad Higa, It Billows Up is an art book created as a companion to the eponymous record by Sontag Shogun. Thad & Sontag asked artists to generate image and text in response to sections of the album. Thad then collaged these submissions using both digital and analogue techniques (cutting, crumpling, typewriting, drawing, etc.) similar to the processes involved in compositions of the album itself. The book’s form and materials (vellum, Japanese stab binding, risograph) also speaks to the pastiche of disparate materials that when arranged, designed, and bound together creates a landscape.

The book originated as a response to sound and grew into a meditation on listening, on hearing, on humanity and the pains and complications of existence. It is the hope for slowness, attentiveness, care for the environment one dwells in and how our created environs affect and interact with others.

This 40-page limited edition book (only 80 copies!) comes with a digital download of "It Billows Up"inscribed in the book as well as a limited edition numbering.

Brooklyn avant-garde ensemble Sontag Shogun present their new multimedia project & 3rd full length album ‘It Billows Up’, available on limited edition 12" vinyl LP and digital formats, as well as a printed Art Book produced by Thad Hilga and featuring exclusive artwork & poetry.

Whereas Sontag Shogun's critically acclaimed 2017 album 'Patterns for Resonant Space' was an experiment in reverse-engineering & overdubbing improvised compositions, 'It Billows Up' is a linear, continuous narrative featuring ambient meshes of layered field recordings, analog oscillators, foley, and improvised piano.

While Pitchfork declared that Sontag Shogun is "never the same twice, always evolving to reveal something new" the band sought to capture an accurate representation of their live set using the collaborative techniques and modular compositions they had developed while on tour in Europe, Japan, and North America in 2016 and 2017.

With Ian Temple’s painterly piano, Jesse Perlstein’s cascade of haunted vocals and found sounds, and Jeremy Young’s intricate manipulation of tapes and kitchen utensils, It Billows Up pieces together sounds of our waking life by crafting thick barricades of meditative, interwoven sonic collages.

The familiar notes of wet footsteps, gray clouds, perplexing rants of passersby, and purring motors of oncoming traffic confidently survey the outskirts of the album, each sound dripping with sparse piano melodies and drifting into its own grainy mist of synesthesia.
