Sontag Shogun closes 2023 with a one-off cover and reimagining of Thom Yorke's "Dawn Chorus" from his seminal 2019 LP "Anima." Collaborating between Montréal, Los Angeles and New York City, Jeremy Young, Jesse Perlstein, and Ian Temple nurture the seed of their source material into full-bloom, weaving watercolored piano notes and divine ambient vocal work with an amalgam of Yorke's original writings and Perlstein's added lyrics.
Sontag Shogun is a trio that makes use of analog sound treatments and nostalgic solo piano compositions in harmony to depict abstract places in our memory. The band has improvised with artists as diverse as Matana Roberts, Julia Kent, Oren Ambarchi, Greg Fox, Moskitoo, Tom Carter, Diana Combo and Aki Onda as well as poets, choreographers, butoh dancers, filmmakers, an improvised fashion designer, a collective of Japanese contemporary video artists, slide projectionists, and scentscape installation artists. Sontag Shogun has released two critically acclaimed projects in partnership with Youngbloods, "Patterns for Resonant Space" (2017) and "It Billows Up" (2019), alongside their most recent full-length effort "valo siroutuu" with Finnish vocalist Lau Nau (Beacon Sound, 2022). Their work has been heralded by the likes of Pitchfork, A Closer Listen, and Igloo Mag for their "evocative sense of place" and cinematic improvisation.
"Dawn Chorus" was recorded in early half of 2023, marking the trio's experimentations merging traditional song structures with their established methods of extemporaneous creation. The titular cover sees a departure from the trio's improvised compositional procedure and largely instrumental sonic pallet, highlighting Perlstein's emotionally textured delivery of Yorke's lyrics atop Temple and Young's ghostly keyboard and synthesizer accompaniment. "Dusk Chorale," the ostensible b-side of the group's digital single release, marks a return to form in blending elongated vocalese, hazy distant rhythms, and spiraling narration outfitted in flowing keyboard chords. "Dawn Chorus" is paired with a music video directed, produced, and edited by Jeremy Young and a limestone lithographic etching designed and printed for Sontag Shogun by Stéfanie Auger-Roy in Montréal in 2023.
